Donald J. Sutherland, Donald, Faculty or Staff, Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, died on 08/24/2009. Professor Emeritus Sutherland was a member of the Entomology. Professor Emeritus Sutherland was an alumnus of the Cook College Class of 1961.
Private services were held in Massachusetts. He is survived by his sister Joanne Sagarino and her husband Arthur of Wakefield, Massachusetts, their two sons and families,and many friends.
Died at the age of 79. He was raised in Melrose, Massachusetts. He graduated in 1951 from Tufts University, earning a B.S. degree. This was followed by a three year enlistment in the US Army in Germany where he served as a Russian translator. Following military service, he commenced his studies in entomology receiving an M.S. degree from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst in 1957 and a PhD in 1961 from Rutgers, where he subsequently joined the faculty. His research focused on biological rhythms and tumors of cockroaches and toxicology of mosquitoes. In 1987 he served as president of the American Mosquito Control Association. In 1991 he received the Cook College Excellence in Teaching Award.
