Alan A. Meredith, died on 02/28/2012.

Alan A. Meredith, 87, of Lavallette, N.J., passed away at home on Feb. 28, 2012. The family will receive friends at the Timothy E. Ryan Home for Funerals, 706 Hwy 35 North, Lavallette, N.J., on Saturday, March 3, 2012, from 2 to 5 p.m. A memorial service will be held at the Island Heights United Methodist Church, Island Heights, N.J., on Sunday, March 4, 2012, at 2 p.m. Condolences may be sent by visiting www.ryanfuneralhome.com.

Alan was born in Montclair, N.J., and graduated from Montclair High School. He went directly into the U.S. Navy Construction Battalions (SeaBees), serving four years in the Pacific Theater until the end of World War II. After the war, Alan attended Rutgers University, playing on their varsity lacrosse team. He graduated from the College of Agriculture and Environmental Science at Rutgers University in 1950 and subsequently earned a master's degree in 1952. He was first employed by Flako Products in New Brunswick, N.J. Returning to Rutgers, Alan taught agricultural economics and marketing at Cook College, Rutgers University, for 33 years, becoming a full professor. He met Doris Eileen Jacobs at Douglass College and they married in 1952. They had three wonderful children, Carol, Glenn, and Scott. After retiring from Rutgers, Alan worked as a booking agent for many circuses, Hoxie Brothers Circus, Alan Hill's Great American Circus, Walker Brothers Circus, and most recently with John Pugh's Cole Brothers Circus. For 15 years he was the marketing director for Vidbel's Olde Tyme Circus and was responsible for many people in the northeast enjoying a family tent circus. A circus fan his entire life, Al and Doris finally attended a national circus fans convention in Hershey, Pa., in 2010. There he was recognized both as a "first of May" (first time attendee) and as a 50-year member! Alan and Doris have been active members of the United Methodist Church. both in New Brunswick and in Island Heights, N.J., throughout their marriage. Alan was also active in the Kiwanis Club of New Brunswick, where he served as president, and the New Jersey Lacrosse Club. He is survived by Doris, his loving wife of over 59 years; daughter, Carol and Martin Smith of East Brunswick, N.J., parents of Eric, Sarah, and Brian; son, Glenn Meredith and Ann Marie Tvedt of Freehold, N.J., and son, Scott and his wife Karen Meredith of Lavallette, N.J., parents of Kyle.
