Vernon Crawford Harris, 83, of West Amwell Township, Lambertville, died Wednesday at Hunterdon Medical Center in Flemington.
Mr. Harris worked at Rutgers University for 32 years as a research farm supervisor until he retired in 1991.
Born in Titusville, Mr. Harris was a lifelong area resident. He attended school in Titusville and Trenton High School. He worked at Fiddlers Creek Farm, Titusville, NJ, until January 1951. He served in the U. S. Marine Corps from January 1951 until 1954. He was a sergeant, Weapons Training Battalion, at Paris Island, SC. He received a Good Conduct Medal, National Service Defense Medal, Rifleman, and Silver Medal.
Son of the late Alvin W. and Marian Ridgeway Harris, he was predeceased in 2005 by his wife of 47 years, Virginia Durborow Harris. He is survived by two daughters, Anita Harris of Lambertville and Sherry Rockafellow and her husband Arthur of Stockton; a son, Donald Whitehead of Lancaster, PA; two grandsons, David Rockafellow and his wife, Christine, of Flemington, and Douglas Whitehead of Enola, PA; two great-grandsons, Tyler and Garrett Rockafellow; a great-granddaughter, Megan Rockafellow of Flemington; a sister, Bernice Johnson; sister-in-law, Valerie Harris, and 11 nieces. He was predeceased by two brothers, Alvin and Lawrence Harris, and a sister, Helen Yard.
A memorial service was held Saturday, January 19 at 11 a.m. at the Wilson-Apple Funeral Home, 2560 Pennington Road, Pennington, N.J. The Rev. Daniel Casselberry, pastor of the Pennington United Methodist Church, officiated. To send a condolence, visit www.wilsonapple.com.
