Joan L. Bildner
Joan Lebson Bildner, 82, of Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, and West Orange, New Jersey, passed away on June 23, 2013.
Born June 6, 1931, in Englewood, New Jersey, Joan was married for 64 years to Allen Bildner, former chair and CEO of Kings Super Markets, a family-owned company for 52 years, until its 1988 sale to Marks and Spencer. Joan was a longtime leader in the Jewish and secular communities, serving on numerous boards, including more recently the Board of Governors of Rutgers University, the Paper Mill Playhouse of Millburn, New Jersey, and the Maltz Theatre in Jupiter, Florida. She was founding co-chair of the New Jersey/Israel Commission, and cofounder with her husband of the Bildner Center for the Study of Jewish Life at Rutgers.
Joan received numerous honors and awards recognizing her community service, including the Martin Luther King Jr. Social Justice Lifetime Achievement Award at Dartmouth College, Volunteer of the Year by the National Society of Fundraising Executives, and honorary doctorates from Bloomfield College, Rowan University, and Rutgers University.
Funeral services were held on June 26 at Temple Sharey Tefilo-Israel in South Orange, New Jersey.
