Lillian Gonzalez, 35, a member of the Scarlet Raiders women's softball team at Rutgers University–Newark in 2000 and 2001, passed away on June 24, 2015. Services were held June 29.
As a member of the Scarlet Raiders, she helped the team to 16 victories in two seasons, including 10 in 2000.
Gonzalez was the beloved coach of the Lady Yellow Jackets club softball team of Bergen County, continuing to play the sport throughout her adult life after graduating from Rutgers–Newark with a bachelor's degree in psychology in 2001.
A kind, generous, and caring individual, she attended every Scarlet Raiders alumni softball game post-graduation and remained involved in the program as a fan and supporter.
Gonzalez worked for the Bergen County Board of Social Services in Rochelle Park and was involved in countless charitable and community-oriented activities. She ran the Save Second Base softball game in support of breast cancer awareness in 2013 and 2014, and played a major role in the 5K color run and entered a team in the 27 Fallen Angels Softball Tournament in support of the tragedy in Sandy Hook (Conn.) in 2012.
She also ran free softball clinics for young girls in urban communities to help grow the sport in New Jersey.
She is survived by her husband, Jesus Alvarez; a son, Ruben Alvarez; her mother, Lillian Milanes; and two stepdaughters, Natalie and Lorena Alvarez.
