John J. Muller V
John Muller V, of Glen Ridge, N.J., a graduate student and part-time English composition instructor at Rutgers University–Newark, died on October 18, 2015, in a car accident on the Garden State Parkway in Paramus, N.J.
Services were held on October 22 at Christ Episcopal Church, Glen Ridge.
Muller, the son of John J. H. Muller IV and Mi-Song Chun, was a member of the Rutgers–Newark Graduate School Class of 2017.
He was considered a “talented young writer and an astute reader and critic,” according to Jayne Anne Phillips, the director of the MFA program in which Muller was enrolled.
“All of us knew him by his ready smile and his lovely, gentle way of being,” Phillips said. A member of Muller’s fiction workshop, Lauren Barbato, wrote that his workshop hopes to "honor Johnny's writing in some way. He was such a great writer and, we're sure, would have been a star. We are devastated."
Jennifer Arena, his supervisor and mentor in the writing program, says, “Johnny was an enthusiastic, smart, talented, humble man who was infectious in his excitement about being a teacher and graduate student. Today is a sad day for the writing program and for the MFA program."
