Joanna M. Ratych
Joanna M. Ratych, 90, professor emerita in the Department of German Studies, School of Arts and Sciences, Rutgers University–New Brunswick, passed away on September 5, 2016.
Services were held on September 9 at the Flynn and Son/Koyen Funeral Home, Metuchen, followed by a Service of Divine Liturgy at The Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Ukrainian Catholic Church, New Brunswick.
Ratych, professor of German language and literature, was among the university’s first tenured women professors. She also served as director of the Department of German Studies. She authored a series of books, publications, essays, and articles and was recognized with numerous accreditations, including Certificate of Merit (Goethe Institute), Lindback Award (Rutgers University), and Friendship Award (Federal Republick of Germany).
Born in Vienna, Austria, Ratych was educated in Berlin until 1945, then became an English and German teacher in Bayreuth, Germany, in the displaced persons camp “Gymnasia.” She later continued her education at the Ludvig-Maximilian University, Munich, where she completed her doctoral degree.
