Emeka T. Nwabuoku, Alumnus of Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, died on October 01, 2006. Emeka was a member of the Livingston College Class of 1979.
His funeral is slated to take place November 30, 2006,
in Issele-Uku, Delta State of Nigeria. A wakekeeping will be held in New
Jersey at a date to be announced later.
After getting his doctorate (an Ed.D. in Music, "A Field Study
of Music as Cultural and Educational System: The Case of the Aniocha Ibos
of Bendel State of Nigeria") from Rutgers in 1979, he returned to his
native Nigeria in January 1980. A pioneer in ethnomusicology and in dance
education in Nigeria, he subsequently taught at the Ahmadu Bello
University, Zaria and the University of Benin, Benin City, where he
retired as an Associate Professor in the Dept. of Theatre Arts, in 2002.
Until his death, which resulted from complications after prostate surgery,
he was a professor emeritus in the department. He was predeceased in 2005 by his daughter Anthonia, and is survived by his wife,
