Dashboard indicators
The staff at the Office of Institutional Research and Planning is central to Rutgers' "culture of assessment." Dashboard indicators – the dozens of measures tracking progress in opportunity, academics, research, operations, and service - evaluate Rutgers' performance over the years, as well as position Rutgers against other institutions of higher education, particularly its peers in the Association of American Universities.

These data help Rutgers administrators make decisions about the university's future in the context of its past performance. They also help educational leaders at Rutgers ensure that the massive student body is meeting institutional expectations and that they are entering industry or graduate education with a degree of the highest value.

The Middle States team recognized Rutgers' use of these indicators as proof of the university's resolute commitment to assessment:

"The use of dashboard indicators from the Office of Institutional Research and Academic Planning confirm that the institution takes the measurement of the data they use for institutional evaluation seriously. From conversations with admissions and student affairs staff and administration, it is clear that they are devoted to using assessment information for the enhancement of the student experience, and to improving programs and services when challenges and opportunities are discovered through such assessments." (p. 16).
Ratio of Executive/Administrative/Managerial (EAM) to Faculty

Operations and Finances: Ratio of Executive/Administrative/Managerial (EAM) to Faculty
Rutgers has consistently maintained a lean operation in terms of high-level executives and administrators compared to other universities. For an institution as large and complex as Rutgers, the university is remarkably light at its core.
Average Amount of Total Aid Received

Educational Opportunity: Average Amount of Total Aid Received
Rutgers outpaces its AAU peers when it comes to the number and percentage of students receiving financial aid. Despite a growing gap between aid and tuition costs, students at Rutgers can be assured that measures are taken to guarantee they are able to pursue a degree.
Faculty Membership in National Academies

Academic Excellence: Faculty Membership in National Academies
This indicator is a good example of how numbers belie a more complicated story. Although Rutgers has more academy members than the median of the AAU publics, a significant distinction, the university appears to be well below the numbers of AAU aspirants, the very top tier of AAU public universities. However, many of Rutgers' AAU peers have medical schools that significantly boost the numbers of faculty elected to the Institute of Medicine.
